Death From Above

Death From Above

Mycetic spores are the nid equivalent of a space marine drop pod – only an imobile T4 monstrous creature (tank shock bait?). Anyway in all previous editions, my nids had to slog it and take it on the chin the whole way. Now I can drop 20 infantry models (that’s a lot of gribblies) or one MC where you need it. Combine it with the Tyrant’s tactics and you get them on a 3+ turn 2. So I had to take the opportunity to put a couple of these in my list. Problem is GW doesn’t have a model for it. Not a problem, because I do enjoy the modeling aspect of the game. The “Alien” movies were the original inspiration for my tyranids and this should be evident in the way I constructed the spores. It all started with a Nerf football. Here is a before and after....

Sooiepalooza 2010

Sooiepalooza 2010

Well I braved the snow and ice and made it down to Fayetteville for sooie 2010. This will be my first fantasy tournament in nine years. There are tons of amazing looking armies here. I will be sure to post some quality photos later on. Wish me luck – it looks like my Ogres are going to need it. Location:Northeast Ave,Fayetteville,United States

Down to the Wire – Sooiepalooza 2010 Army Prep

I have been swamped this week trying to get my Ogre army ready for Sooiepalooza this weekend. I pretty much had everything ready to go except for finishing up 12 Ogre Bulls, Three Yeti, Two Man-Eaters, 12 Gnoblar Trappers, and all the movement trays. So maybe I had a bit more to do than I realized. Finishing up the twelve remaining Ogre Bulls was pretty easy. I started on them last week and would crank out three a night. I then finished up the Maneaters. Over the weekend I painted the Gnoblar Trappers. This week I started in on the bases and the Yeti. As of Wednesday night I had all the bases done and the Yeti’s assembled and primed. I also put together the movement trays and primed them black. Last night I finished up the Yetis and put the static grass on all of the bases that...

TMP Metals

TMP Metals

TMP = True Metallic Paint Always reading the blogs and things those zany golden demons guys are doing trying to hone my skills I ran across this article. This guys has won more demons than you can shake a stick at and is my second favorite painter of all time. Not wanting to waste any time trying this method I found a model lying around that was already assembled just waiting to be painted. It was a be’lakor fantasy warriors of chaos model from the special game setting a couple years back ‘Storm of Chaos’. I was going to run him as a demon prince in my 40k all khorne chaos demons army. I removed the wings and green stuffed them in sculpting the spiny stuff on his back. Mounted him on a 60mm base (the 40mm bases are way to small for princes in my humble opinion) threw...

Tyranid Impact on the Metagame

I keep hearing in places that the Metagame is shifting back to more of a mix of Plasma and Melta rather than all Melta. With the release of the new Tyranid codex I only see this trend continuing to increase. Since Tyranids have not vehicles their entire army has to foot-slog it across the board. I know, I know – they have drop pods and can outflank, but this still leaves them vulnerable to shooting as once they pop out of the pod they can’t get into HTH for a turn. And since there are so many juicy options for monstrous creatures with T6 the Plasma Gun is a no brainer against them. You get two shots that will wound on threes and ignore saves vs. one shot that wounds on a two and ignores saves. You also have the option of range with the Plasma. This isn’t to...

Airbrush Tips From AwesomePaintJob.com

AwesomePaintJob.com has a new video going over some good tips for the new airbrush user. I wish that this had been around when I started looking at getting an airbrush. Video from AwesomePaintJob.com - The biggest tip in there that I saw for the new user was to not start on a cheap airbrush and then move up to a better, more expensive one but to start out with a more expenive, better model and then get good with that. I think that this would have saved me a lot of frustration and really improved my skills a lot faster than what they have. I started off with a really cheap Badger airbrush and it does well for base-coating models but isn’t good for much else. When I bought a small airbrush compressor it came with a ‘free’ double action airbrush and it is tons better. It is a...

Link – Bone Sword and Lash Whip Conversion

Link – Bone Sword and Lash Whip Conversion

Hydra over at BOLS has an excellent tutorial on creating some easy and sharp looking Lash Whips and Bone Swords for the new Tyranids. I have seen several conversion of Bone Swords where they just cut off the blade of the Scything Talon and turn it upside down but this conversion really looks good and doesn’t look like too much work – especially if you batch converted these. Does anyone else have any good Lash Whip or Bone Sword conversion ideas? Here are the highlights from the article at BOLS. Head on over to this link to check out the rest. - Hey all! My name is Simon Schnitzler, aka “Hydra” and I’m gonna walk you converting Tyranid Warriors with Boneswords and Lashwhips. Lets get to it!As long as I remember, I have been madly in love with monsters. And though I started back in the dark and glorious...

Rules Query – Gets Hot – How Do You Play It?

A while back in ye olde garage Jester hit upon something that we hadn’t really noticed before. He has started fielding a few more Plasma gunners here and there in his list and an issue with Gets Hot popped up - If you have multiple plasmagunners in a squad how do you roll for gets hot? Do you roll them all at once and take armor saves on any ones as a group, or do you roll each gun separately and the model that rolls any ones rolls them? After a bit of debate we decided that each gunner should roll their shots and armor saves individually. This keeps trooper B from dying when trooper A’s gun overheats. Fast forward just a bit and it looks like we aren’t the only ones who have had this issue lately. Over at Corbania Prime this weekend they ran into the same...

Tyranid Codex Review – HQ

The baby is sleeping so I have time to type. As promised, this is the second installment of my walkthrough of the nid codex. It is my opinion, which means I tend to see things from my perspective as a gamer. Your opinions may differ and I welcome the feedback. In reading these, the questions you should keep asking yourself (assuming you analyze this strategically as I do) is what is the purpose of this unit? What do I want them to do? All too often, you see armies (and units) that try to do too much. The problem is you can’t do it all so you are throwing points into something that will not earn them back for you. Keep that in mind as you read on and it may help you in your decision making process. Hive TyrantPro:MC, 4 auto hitting Psy to choose from, numerous options...

Blood Angels – Codex Table of Contents?

Game-Headz has up what appears to be the most concrete list of content from the new Blood Angels book that I have seen so far. Either someone was very bored and made up a false table of contents or this is from a leaked paly-testing copy. My money is on the play testing copy but you never can tell. From Game-Headz - Ok stuff is really starting to pour out at this time. In the UK the feb Wd is showing up and there have been some conformations…Furiso Dread, and a Librarian Dread! (NOTE THIS MAY BE the actual page listings, I can not confirm or deny if it’s really the one in the new codex, so for now it’s just “Fan generated” and not from a GW Codex, take with Salt) also this got leaked out too.Its the army list and page numbers from the new codexGet a...
