Defiler Objective Markers

Defiler Objective Markers

When Bell of Lost Souls announced they were having an objective marker competition I decided to throw my hat into the ring. I thought about it for a few days and couldn’t come up with anything good. A few days before the competition due date I was digging through my bits box and found most of a Defiler. Apparently I was saving it for something and this contest turned out to be just what I was saving it for. I used my razorsaw to cut the pieces down to size, glued them to the bases, and then got busy painting. I wanted this to be a Death Guard Defiler so I used bone and green for the main colors. I don’t think the starting colors ended up having much impact on the models because I HEAVILY weathered these pieces. I wanted them to look like they had been sitting...

Imperial Guard Manticore Conversion – Finished

Imperial Guard Manticore Conversion – Finished

Well here she is – my finished Imperial Guard Manticore conversion. In my last few posts on this model I showed you the pieces I was using and then walked you through the conversion process. Today I will talk about how I painted this model. Since I want this to go with my Steel Legion/Death Korps of Krieg Imperial Guard army the main colors on this model needed to be a dark weathered gray and a nice dark red. I painted the gun and the rocket launcher separately. First I primed the tank black and then sprayed it with a gray primer that is really close to Fortress Grey. I sprayed it further back then normal and left some shadows in the recesses. The next step was to add a bit of pre-weathering. I used Chaos Black and Boltgun Metal to apply a few paint scratches. At this time...

Death Korps of Krieg part 7

Death Korps of Krieg part 7

Paint Initiated! I’ve picked out my paint scheme. I’ve started airbrushing on the base coats. Right now they look very ‘steel legion’. They won’t when all is said and done though. I didn’t want my stuff to be the normal dark grays of the Dkok’s so I picked out a more ‘stand outish’ color scheme and went with it. The Camo pattern is done with masking tape and codex gray and desert yellow. Now for the weathering the funnest part of the hobby for me. You get to take something meh and smack it with the realistic stick. More updates soon!

New Killa Kans and Deff Dread

New Killa Kans and Deff Dread

I picked up a box of Ork Killa Kans and an Ork Deff Dread the weekend they came out and have been laboring away at them ever since. These models were a blast to put together. The Killa Kans have so much character and are really easy to pose. The Deff Dread is just imposing – it is HUGE! I knew how I wanted to arm everything so I didn’t bother magnetizing any of the models. I wanted the Killa Kans to all have Grotzookas and the Deff Dread needed an extra pair of close combat arms to bump his attacks up to six on the charge (NASTY!) I did have to do a bit of conversion work on two of the Kans. The kit only comes with one Grotzooka so I had to make an additional two. I had one of the Battlewagon Deff-Rolla sprues on hand so...

Doomrider! – What Was I Thinking?

Doomrider! – What Was I Thinking?

A few weeks back at the doubles tournament down in Conway I saw a model in the used cabinet that I just couldn’t live without – Doomrider! This guy is one of the more interesting Warhammer 40k miniatures that I have come across. He is starting to show his age (he is a bit goofy) and there aren’t any current ‘official’ rules for him – but that’s ok! Doomrider doesn’t care about any of that! The model was in a pretty sad state. Ole Doomrider had been primed black and had a LOT of glue holding him together. This didn’t stop me – my buddy Simple Green would make it all a-ok.A few days in the tank and this is where I am at on this model -Wow. He is looking pretty rough at this stage but I have high hopes! I am planning on using some Privateer Press Paints...

Fneryll Miniatures – Plague Daemon

Fneryll Miniatures – Plague Daemon

Here is a model that I have been working at off and on for several months – Fenryll Miniatures Putrid Horror. I a very nice conversion over at Santa Cruz Warhammer of this model being used as a Nurgle Daemon prince and I immediately went out and ordered one. Finding a reseller in the US was a bit tricky but I finally found a nice site. I usually stick to Citadel and Games Workshops models for my Warhammer 40k gaming but this model was just too neat to pass up. I already have three different Daemon Princes (2 Slaanesh and one Scratchbuilt Nurgle Prince) but there is always room for more. During the great cleanup I finally got around to painting this model. It was really fun to paint since it has such neat texture and character. I painted this guy the standard way that I do my Nurgle...

March Rumor Roundup

There are a few juicy tidbits of information that have been floating around this month. Most of the rumors that I have seen have been focusing on Dark Eldar, Forces of the Inquision, and even a bit of Necron news thrown in. From what I have been seeing the most likely next release at this point is Dark Eldar. Grey Knights are also getting a lot of attention at this point. ColonalKlink from Warseer had this conversation with a local GW Manager - righto, tonight i was chatting to the local GW boss, when i asked about a future Necron codex stating that i didnt want to spend £400 on an army if the new codex is coming out this year, he promply stated “There are no necrons this year, its dark eldar” to which i replied “excuse me?” he promptly shut up and tried his best to change...

Imperial Guard Manticore Conversion – Done with the Conversion

Imperial Guard Manticore Conversion – Done with the Conversion

Here are some shots of the my Imperial Guard Manticore conversion that I have finished the modeling on. In my last post I showed you how I built up the rear platform and in this one I will show you how I finished up the conversion and what the finished model looks like. In this shot you can see the base of the Catalyst Rocket Launcher from Quantum Gothic. I trimmed down the ‘feet’ off of the base to get it to fit. Once I did that it fit like it was made to go there. I then added some rivets to the top piece that I had made out of plasticard. These rivets are a bit bigger than the ones on the rest of the tank but that is fine with me – it makes it look like they bolted this piece in to a standard Chimera STC...

Gap Filling with Baking Soda

Gap Filling with Baking Soda

I watched this video from AwesomePaintJob.com a while back and had wondered how well it would work. The premise is really simple – put down a layer of superglue in your gap, cover it with baking soda, then file it smooth once it has dried. It seemed to simple and I was a bit skeptical so I was pretty happy when I had a small gap to fill on my Imperial Guard Manticore conversion that I am working on. Here is the gap. It was between two pieces of plasticard that I had cut to build a platform for the Manticore rocket launcher. I laid down a thin line of superglue across the gap. I then spooned a liberal amount of baking soda on the glue and let it dry for just a bit. Here it is after I shook off the excess. And here is the final result...

Hobby Tools – Project Notebook

One of the handiest tools that I have had while modeling and painting miniatures has been a thick little notebook that I am able to carry around with me. I jot down ideas or sketches of things that inspire me or that I want to remember. The single best thing that has come out of this is that I have been writing down my paint ‘recipes’ whenever I start a new project. I am a compulsive army collector so I will usually have several projects going at once. Oftentimes months may go before I come back to a project. Before I started keeping a notebook I would forget the steps in my painting scheme and would have to figure it out again. Since I started keeping this written down it has been very easy to go back and pick right up where I left off. I also make sure...
