A Monkey Pushing Plastic Men

A Monkey Pushing Plastic Men

So, yesterday I played my first game of fantasy in many years, which also makes it my first game of 8th edition ever. I played against a significantly more experienced player who was nice enough to coddle me as we worked through the rules. I’ll start by saying that I had a really good time. Considering the fact that we were looking up rules pretty regularly, the game moved pretty quickly. We played a 2,250 game (my army was all proxy). I ran Dwarfs, and he ran Empire. So, here are my initial impressions: 1. Coming from 40k, building a list is insane. I could make a pretty competitive list with most 40k armies, but it’s so different in fantasy that it’s a bit daunting. However, while I feel 40k players who are just now delving into fantasy will have a steep learning curve, I think many fantasy veterans...

New FAQs are up – Tyranids and Blood Angels

There are two new FAQS up at Games Workshop – the Tyranids and Blood Angels. These FAQS clear up quite a few thing and also answer a few more far reaching issues. The biggest issue that has been covered is the Doom of Malan’Tai. The powers do NOT affect units in vehicles, and you ARE allowed cover saves against it. One other big thing that has been cleared up is that Fast vehicles are allowed to move Flat Out during the scout move, and they are also allowed to use smoke launchers. This issue has been contested quite a bit here and there. I’m really glad that they issued a ruling on the Doom – this is in direct opposition to what the INAT has ruled so they should be updating their rules pretty soon.

Throne of Skulls Tournament Pack Released

Throne of Skulls Tournament Pack Released

The Throne of Skulls Tournament Pack from Games Workshop has been released. You can check it out here – http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1240205a_ToS_Rules_Pack.pdf I just downloaded the pack and read through it and it is really interesting. It almost feels like these events will be much more of a hobby tournament than a competitive event. The main reason that makes me think this is how the overall winner is determined. It isn’t the player with the highest points, it is the player who has the greatest margin of victory over similar armies. That sounds really confusing but it is like this – if the average points of all Space Marine players was six, and you scored fifteen point, you would have a margin of victory of nine. A Daemon player might have had sixteen points, but the average score amongst Daemon players was ten, then the Daemon player would only have a...

Hordes / Warmachine Rules Primer from Yes The Truth Hurts

Hordes / Warmachine Rules Primer from Yes The Truth Hurts

Yes The Truth Hurts has a real solid overview of the Warmachine / Hordes rules. Here is a real rough breakdown of the turn orders - The first thing you’ll notice when reading over some of the rules is that Warmachine is not a game played in phases, bar the most cursory usage of the term. The basic breakdown is between three main phases: Maintenance, Control, and Activation. The Maintenance phase, in a lot of games, doesn’t even come up – as it’s only purpose is to resolve continuous effects or certain (very uncommon) special rules. The Control Phase is the true beginning of tactics, and it’s here that Warcasters get Focus, Warlocks siphon Fury, and the general resource management aspect of the game comes into effect. This phase is often very difficult for newer players to grasp the ramifications of, as poor allocation or siphoning can seriously obstruct...

Deburring Tool Video from Dark Future Games

Dark Future games has a video up showing off a deburring tool. I have seen a few sites make mention of using these, but I have never bit the bullet and bought one. Has anyone on here used one of these before? Is it worth it vs. turning a hobby knife sideways? Post in the comments and let us know.

The Blood Drive part 5

The Blood Drive part 5

Why So Angry? I’ve started on my very Angry bloodthirster. I’m painting the wings and the body separate because they’re basically massive. So he’ll be painted in 3 parts and assembled the rest of the way and touched up around the edges of the seems after final assembly. This model was a blast to assemble with every piece that went on he looked angrier and angrier. I’ve laid down the base coat and I can’t wait to get ready to slap some paint on my 8th ed fantasy / 40k army. I’ve switched back to the korne project to get a fully painted fantasy army on the table for tournaments and what not. Hope you all enjoy. Did I mention this guys is angry?

Tomb King Rumors

Tomb King Rumors

Well it looks like the rumor floodgates have re-opened. Here are a whole host of Warhammer Fantasy Tomb King rumors that Kroothawk put together over at Dakka Dakka from various sources. I wouldn’t put too much stock in these as they are all over the place, but it is nice to have an idea as to what is going on with the army. The current release date best guess on these guys is in October. Characters: New rules: Skeleton Units (Archers, Warriors, Chariots, Light Cavalry, Sand Stalkers, Tomb Guard) can march within 12” of general, 6” of Tomb Prince Constructs, divinely blessed (Ushbati, Tomb Scorpion, Maidens of the Gods, Bone Giants) can march within 12” of the hierophant and 6” of a liche priest Tomb Prince cannot use movement spell anymore, only strike more one Premise seems to be basically means tomb king armies movement won’t be so restricted...

New Ogre Hero from Avatars of War

New Ogre Hero from Avatars of War

Avatars of War has a new model up for order – the Ogre Hero! This model looks amazing. It looks very inspired by the Games Workshop Ogre Hero/Lord model, but has enough differences that they (hopefully) won’t get sued. Oh wow. Wait. I typed that above and then went and found a picture of the current Games Workshop Ogre Tyrant and man, this guy is looking pretty rough. The Avatars of War model wins this contest, hands down. The model is available in their shop for 22 Euros (which converst to about $27 US) so this guy is a STEAL compared to the Games Workshop model which clocks in at $45 US.

Brilliant Ku’Gath Conversion

Brilliant Ku’Gath Conversion

I just saw this guy over at The Adepts Forge and I had to pass it along. Ku’Gath The Plague Father - This is one of the most brilliant conversions of this guy that I have seen. It is very straight forward, recognizable, and made of easily available parts. Looking at this guy you know it is Ku’Gath. The parts involved appear to be a Corpse Cart, a base or two of Nurglings, a Great Unclean One, vomit from a River Troll, an Chaos Sapce Marine Nurgle Icon, and a few bits and bobs (a small kettle piece, and what appears to maybe be some Hirst Arts planks for the floor. The total price on this guy is probably up around $100 in parts, but man is it a slick model.

So Long Allies – ‘New’ Witch Hunters Codex and Daemon Hunters Codex Are Up

So Long Allies – ‘New’ Witch Hunters Codex and Daemon Hunters Codex Are Up

The ‘New’ Witch Hunters Codex and Daemonhunters Codex are available for download at Games Workshops Website. I say new in a very loose way – these are pretty much verbatim from the current print versions that are out there. There is one small and very important difference though – there are no rules for allies in either codex. WHAT? You heard right, there are no rules that allow Space Marines or Imperial Guard to take units out of either codex. The Witch Hunters codex still has rules for allowing you to induct a certain few units from the Imperial Guard of Space Marine Codex, but not the other way around. I say good riddance and good job! The 35 point Inquisitor with two mystics was just crap. This allowed Imperial Guard to negate one of their biggest weaknesses – the alpha strike – and it all but nerfed Daemons when playing...
