Doubles, Doubles, Toil and Trouble

Doubles, Doubles, Toil and Trouble

I love doubles tournaments!  There is something about setting up your army side by side with one of your best chums and playing against some unusual combinations that just makes the whole experience especially enjoyable.  However, there is also a certain degree of shenanigans inherent in the doubles tournament that also makes it fun in a very unique way.  These style of tournaments goes beyond top lists and armies you usually see on the table, and you have to look carefully at both opponents lists to see what they are up to.  Having someone to experience the highs and lows of a game with helps keep things light hearted.  For me it is more difficult to get wrapped up in the tactics and stress of the competition.  It seems easier to swallow those bad dice rolls when you are laughing alongside someone else you know. But at the same...

Foray into 40k

Foray into 40k

Welcome to my second installment of “Foray into 40k”. I’ve been playing a lot of games with quite a bit of list tinkering in between. Early on I just proxied lots of models, but I found that was much to confusing for someone learning how to play. Problem was, I didn’t really want to commit to anything particular on my terminators. Given that I’ve been fielding between 20-25 in most games, the load-out can be varied to really change the feel of the game. I mentioned this early on to Big D and he suggested I magnetize all the arms/weapons. So that’s what I set out to do. The first thing was to accumulate enough weapons to actually do this with. I went through old bits I bought off a guy, bought some on ebay, and broke them off of models I had already put together. While gathering up those...

Getting back in the game

Getting back in the game

After two 40k games in the last six months, it’s time to get back in the groove.  The nids are going to sleep for a while.  It has been the subject of some debate across the internets about whether they are competitive or not.  IMO fun, yes; competitive, no.  Bottom line, the bubble wrap build only works if your opponent lets it.  Every codex that came after nids has been pretty stout.  Each new codex brings something to the table that nids really have trouble with.  Vehicles and THSS termies.  The sheer amount of DE poison makes my MC cry.  *sigh* So until the nids get some new codex lov’n, they will sit the bench. I am going back to my very first 40K army, Eldar.  I started playing back when the shuriken gun used “the funky red d3 with a misfire” dice.  Back when the game was more...

Red-Headed Stepchild’s Revenge!

Red-Headed Stepchild’s Revenge!

So, I’m currently plugging along with the construction and painting of my Daemon army. I’m transitioning out of my Space Wolves, and several ideas that were previously half-formed have begun to solidify. One of the most persistent ideas was discussed by Jester last week, the fact that so many players don’t know all of the rules for those codices that have drifted around the periphery for most of 5th edition. Another, and the one which I’d like to rehash today, is the concept of playing the overall meta-game. Admittedly, every area, be that city, state, region, or even nation-wide, has its own tendencies and trends of play style and list building, but, at least partially due to the internet, certain veins of thought have become more prevalent than others: Space Marines, Mech Guard, Emo Space Marines, Space Marines who refuse to wear helmets, etc. Due to this, there is...

Friday Kegger of Knowledge at TauTauTau

Friday Kegger of Knowledge at TauTauTau

So this week was pretty slow as far as painting goes. My forge world stuff isnt in yet, so all I really have to work on are my kroot and bases. I managed to finish painting 10 bases and pin some kroot that I had previously painted for the army. I also started painted 5 of the bigger bases. To do this, I had to begin my venture into the world of wet blending. It has pretty much shaken my world as far as painting goes. Everything I paint seems to look so much better now. Even as I say this, I know that two months down the road I will hate all of it again. Anyway, here are some pictures of the bases and kroot. The kroot are based with Army Painter Skeleton Bone or whatever its called. I did a blend of scab red and blazing orange...

Blog Facelift

Blog Facelift

The blog is now just about 2 years old and we now have over 1000 posts since its inception.  To celebrate I thought the blog needed a nip and tuck to be brought more inline with the newer blog structures out there.  My primary desire was to change the blogs front page to post summaries instead of the full story.  I like being able to go to a blog and seeing how many posts have happened since I last visited without having to scroll all over the place. A secondary focus was to move away from the black background.  To me, Black is a little hard on the eyes to read from and I wanted to go to a more neutral background.    I also wanted to create more of a focus on comments, so I made it where anyone can comment (albeit with captchas) at any time. I...

Cheating Fate

Cheating Fate

I play 40k and WFB because they are fun. Pure and simple. We line up army men and throw them forward in a blaze of magical comets and lascannons. I play Malifaux because I love it. It’s a fantastic game with some (hopefully) soon corrected shortfalls. The card mechanic sets it apart from most other wargames on the market. The ability to cheat fate helps offset my terrible luck and the fantastic model range is really a joy to work with. The last set of models I finished up are for my Arcanist crew. The Arcanists represent the, well, arcane gifted of Malifaux. The crew I chose from the book is Rasputina. Her backstory really grabbed me as she was chosen as a vessel of December, one of the Tyrant spirits that lurks in the shadows…. The paint scheme was simple. I knew I wanted blue to be the...

Easy Object Source Lighting Method

Easy Object Source Lighting Method

Big D here to share a little trick that I am very slowly refining – Object Source Lighting (or OSL.) The basic idea of this technique is to make it look like an object on or near a model is shining light. There are several really good tutorials on how to do this out there, but I found most of them to be a bit too involved. They had you imagining spheres of vary degrees of intensity, you were supposed to wet blend and highlight, and it just seemed a bit much to me – I was just wanting to try something simple and see how it looks. Since I wanted to keep it simple I decided to use the simplest of all miniature painting techniques – drybrushing. For this experiment I dug some terminators out of the bits box and primed them black. From there I applied three...

Knowing is Winning

Knowing is Winning

There are so many warhammer 40k armies out there. Sure after playing for a long while it may not seem like it. It does tend to becomes a game of ‘oh, yeah I’ve seen this build before’ and I have an idea how to respond. But really there are almost countless builds and combinations of units. To a new player it seems limitless. When does that begin to change and at what point does that alter a players perception of the game? I often forget that experience comes from playing and usually don’t take time to think about how well my opponent knows my army and how that will affect our battle, but perhaps I will begin considering this when I setup for my games in the future. Ive been on a 40 k hiatus as of late and missed the dark elder codex entirely. I skimmed it, I...
