High on the Hawg – Weekly Top Links

High on the Hawg – Weekly Top Links

Welcome to the first High on the Hawg Weekly Top Links - 1. Really great looking Adeptus Mechanicus tank from The Mordian 7th 2. Here is a good wet blending tutorial from Black Dot Barrel. He makes a good point that wet blending is only for a handful of scenarios, but it works really well where it is called for. 3. Popping the bubblewrap - Stelek does an amazing job with a tactica on how to break through a bubblewrap. You have to ignore any jabs at the community but if you can get past them this post is top notch. 4. Couple of interesting links on the value of money in Dungeons and Dragons - link - link - The economy in Dungeons and Dragons is just so screwy that it doesn’t make any sense past about third level, but this goes into trying to figure it out/have it make more sense using the...

Cheating Fate – Khador War Jack

Cheating Fate – Khador War Jack

So things have been kind of slow in the land of Malifaux, got a scrap in against a good friend of mine, but I failed to take any pictures – so I figured i’d save you from a Wall of Text write-up of how it went. Instead I figured that’d I take some time to show off some of my other miniatures. These guys come from my Khador Warjacks from Warchamine by Privateer Press. I wanted to use a simple scheme and still stay true, to the heavy military theme. This was also an experiment in using the P3 paint range which I think is really solid. I need to get some units to fill out around these bad boys, but i’ve been busy with Malifaux and fighting off the sweet siren song of Hordes… and Tada!

Board Game Review: Carson City

Board Game Review: Carson City

Two words: Cowboy. Meeples. Designed by Xavier Georges and published by Eagle Games, Carson City is a really fun board game all about settling a brand new town in the old west.  Based around the budding city of Carson City, Nevada, you are one of the wealthy entreprenuer cowboys out to make a buck.  Taking on various roles each round, you do this by claiming land, building buildings, expanding your assets, and scoring victory points.  Carson City employs a few familiar mechanics – role selection, worker placement, tile placement – but mixes in some really cool dynamics to create a very unique experience. The game is played in a total of four rounds – this game has a round counter, so you have to get going and keep an eye on the “clock.”  Each round is played in essentially 3 phases, although the action phase is really the meat and potatoes of the game. ...

Grey Knight Storm Raven

Grey Knight Storm Raven

Since the Grey Knight Codex is coming out this week I decided to show you a project I have been working on. I am paiting up Sweet E’s Grey Knights for him and he decided he wanted a Storm Raven. He wanted to be able to use it primarily with his Grey Knights but also wanted the option to field it wiht Blood Angels if he ever decided to build that as an army. To that end we went with a non-traditional color scheme (Bone, Bronze, and a touch of Red) and I had quite a bit of artistic license on this model. The first thing I decided was that I wanted it to be half-and-half. I had never done a model this way and I thought it was about time. I primed the model black, let it dry, and then put a piece of painters tape right down...

Riddle Me This! Rules Quiz Episode III

Riddle Me This! Rules Quiz Episode III

The Setup:You are playing dark eldar and it is about to be the end of turn 5 of an objective game.  In a desperate bid to go for the win you have stretched your 10 man wych squad to cover and claim two objectives, by spreading them apart a maximum of 2″ beween each model.  You currently hold both objectives with one unit! The Situation:  The Ig player, your opponent, sprays your wyches with miscelaneous fire and you must now remove 4 casualties.  In an attempt to keep the game in your favor, you remove the wyches from the middle of the Wych line breaking coherency.  You hope the game ends turn 5, but for now you will still hold both objectives.  Unfortunately, bad goes to worse and you fail your panic check! The Riddle:  If the game doesn’t end until turn 6 or 7 what happens to the...

New Dwarf Berzerker Plastic Unit from Avatars of War

New Dwarf Berzerker Plastic Unit from Avatars of War

Avatars of War has just announced the pre-order for their PLASTIC Dwarf Berzerker unit and man do they look slick. These guys will be shipping the last week of may. I have ordered a few models form Avatars of War before – the Dwarf Slayer – and have been really impressed with the quality. The detail on the above unit just looks amazing. These guys retail for 25 Euros or about $35 US and includes free shipping if you order two or more boxes. That is pretty nice for a box of 20 Dwarfs. If you are wanting to use these as a replacement for Games Workshop Dwarf Slayers you will be really coming out ahead as all of GW’s models are pewter. I have always been tempted to do a Dwarf Slayer army but have held back because of the cost and the fact that it would just...

Board Game Review: Railways of the World

Board Game Review: Railways of the World

I admit that, at first, I wasn’t even remotely interested in a game about trains. Why, you might be idly pondering, would I want to avoid a genre that I think is ripe for grand board gaming fun? Because, quite frankly, every train or series of connected “things” game that I’ve played relies either solely or heavily on a set collecting mechanic, which is one of the very few mechanics I truly despise. Resource collecting, money collecting, card collecting – which could all be reasoned to be some form of set collecting, I suppose – are fine with me. It’s just that when I start collecting sets just to “lay them down” and form a line, I get supremely bored. Two specific examples that come to mind are Ticket to Ride and Thurn & Taxis. It’s not that I hate these games, per se (I own copies of both...
