High on the Hawg – Weekly Top Links #5

High on the Hawg – Weekly Top Links #5

Great review of the new Lord of the Rings LCG from Fantasy Flight Games from The Hopeless Gamer. I have this on order and am really excited to get in a game or two. Days of Wonder is putting out a new Small World Expansion. Dante shares his desk and workspace. Dark Future Games asks if the Grey Knights have forced you to changed up your list. A pair of really slick tables from Chicago Terrain Factory.

Okay, now to address the issue of the Mordiem Championship. I believe Eric’s video really summed up the event. That’s behind us. Now we must team up and become the ultimate doubles team. I’d like to compare it to when Piccolo and Goku realize that they have to team up for the greater good of humanity. This is quite ironic, because that is exactly how I feel about WARGAMESCON doubles tournament. I, of course, am Goku. Eric will be Piccolo. Raditz is our opponent. What a beautiful metaphor. The endless torrent of smack that is going to be talked on this blog between now and then will make my Mordheim smack look like a freaking Judy Bloom novel. I think it’s safe to say that if the #1 and #2 Mordeim players in the world team up for 40k doubles, then no two people could possibly beat them. I...

Fantasy Ard boyz Round 3

I had to face a pretty scary list on the final table. We were pretty much playing for first. An orc player and a CAWS member so he is no slouch to fantasy. Geordy’s List Grimnore IronhideZigzag warzag (The special character orc wizard)Orc BossGoblin bsb2 lvl 1 Night Goblin Shamans45 Night goblins40 orc big uns40 orc boyz40 orc boyz40 black orcsCrazy spider thing It was the diagonal deployment and stuff could end up in reserves on a 1. He got first turn and deployed all his stuff on my left flank heavily. His spider and a 40 man unit of boyz ended up in reserves. I bunkered in the very far corner behind a woods. I have a lot of shooting and long range magic so I needed the extra turns to soften those units up. I guarded my flanks wiht the black guard and the chariot and hydra’s...

[Malifaux] Cheating Fate

I wanted to break up my recent tactica/walls of text and bring a podcast i’ve started listening too some limelight time on the blog: The Aethervox. They have a small library at the moment so it’s easy to get to the beginning and catch up if you want to check it out. Content: 4/5While all the content is Malifaux specific, they do branch outside Malifaux occasionally and look into influences like music or television shows that convey the proper theme. While I personally enjoy these little breaks, I know not everyone tuning into a gaming cast wants a 10 minute interlude of Tom Waits. Knowledge: 3/5 The hosts have a good grasp of the game, but they are clearly building forces/learning the game at this stage. Again, this is great for newer players as they don’t feel like they are decades behind – but power gamers could lose patience...

Wednesday in the warp: horrors

Wednesday in the warp: horrors

Hey folks, This week I finished off 3/4th of the horrors for my army only 5 more to go and I’m done and onto the display and basing. For my display the plan has changes immensely, I decided the LED system was going to be too tedious, take too much time and possibly take away from the painting when lit. In place of that I’ve turned to BigD to help me with some lighting effects on the runes which sound like they’re going to turn out really slick. This is the model layout for the display board I See you all next week, Dan

Fantasy Ard Boys Round 2

We had an odd number of players at the event and no ringer army. I got a by first round. My two other matches were both against Orcs. I was intimidated because I haven’t really got the new orc book down yet. Luckily it was new enough I don’t think my opponents have it 100% yet. I didn’t write anything down so this is all off memory. My opponents list was; Fat goblin chariot special characterA couple of goblin warbosses (2 or 3)2 Lvl 2 Goblin wizardsa Lvl 4 Orc wizardOrc Hero in chariot2 units of wolf rider fast cav3 or 4 large units of orces. 30ish maybe10 black orcs4 groups of 40 goblinsspear chukkaRock Lobbagoblin wolf chariotorc chariot(I still think I’m missing some stuff…) The mission was very standard. 12 inches in alternating deployment. One core unit got a ‘bloody choppa’ which gave the unit +1 strength and attack....

Adventures In Press Molding pt. 2 – Enter the Instant Mold

Adventures In Press Molding pt. 2 – Enter the Instant Mold

This week I got dug in on a project that I am working on. I am modeling up a unit of Terminators for Jester my’s doubles list. Since I am painting these guys are going to match Jester’s Eldar troops I decided that they needed to look a bit Eldar-y themselves. To this end I decided to use the end of a scatter laser for the head of their Thunderhammer. In order to get enough of these bits to use I decided to try my hand at some more press molding. Last time I used a two part silicone putty and had good results with it. This time I decided to try my hand at the new kid on the block – Instant Mold. This stuff is known known by several different names – Instant Mold, Oyumaru, Polymorph, and Fantastic Plastic. The basic idea is that you get this...

Metagames Tournament #4 Eldar vs. IG and Finale

Game 3: For Game three I drew an Eldar player on a very dense City table. The table was dominated in the center by a 4 story solid building that measured about 12” by 12” with a couple of pieces of ruins in each quarter. The mission was a mix of kill points and Capture and Control. We would set up via spearhead and a single objective was placed into the center of each of the quarters that we did not deploy into. This placed both of the objectives into a ruins. His List: 1 farseer with mindwar, fortune and singing spear. 1 avatar 3 vyper jetbikes with scatterlasers 3 shining spears 10 man unit of troops wraithguard with warlock and conceal 10 man dire avengers unit with bladestorm in a serpent 6 man unit of fire dragons in a fireprism 10 man unit of dire avengers with bladestorm...

Mordheim Championship

This was the big week for the Mordheim League Championship at the War Pig game store. Those of you who followed the buildup this week on The Hogs of War forums will know that the championship match was between bdix’s Beastmen warband and my Skaven warband. Anybody that read in the forums also knows that bdix’s was talking a lot of trash this week. On paper, this is a really good matchup for the league championship. Bdix had played a great deal more games than I had, but I had won both of our head to matchups in stylish fashion. Both armies had some dirty characters and were built primary on speed and close combat attacks. In the mordheim game, these two items always seem to reign supreme. On the way home from the Meta Games tournament, bdix and I had negotiated some slightly different terms for the final match. We...

Late Night Ramblings…

Late Night Ramblings…

So, I’ve hit the grind portion of my tournament preparation. Dannato is nearing the end of his Daemon army construction, and I envy him. I’ve picked up the pace recently, finishing up a unit of Horrors and starting on my second unit of Fiends. That leaves 3 units of Horrors, a unit of Fiends, 2 Tzeentch Princes, and the Masque in about 45 days. That’s a bit daunting, and my friends (I’m looking at you Big D and WildEyed) have been giving me grief and doubting my ability to finish the army. I don’t know that I disagree with them totally. I’m a notoriously meticulous (read as “slow”) painter, but I’m determined to try. Anyways, all of this and an inability not to read blog articles on Daemons have left me with a very simple, if disturbing, question: “Is it all for naught with the coming of Grey Knights?”...
