Looks like the cat might be out of the bag. Earlier this evening a pdf started circulating that is supposedly the new edition of Warhammer 40k. I’ve had a look through the file and it strongly resembles the leaked 5th edtion codex from a few years back. So far all the major rumors that have come out have been present -
- You roll to hit vs. how fast a model moved (called it’s Evasion stat)
- Preferred Enemy works for shooting
- Lots of new rules – Fearless 1,2,3 Eternal Warrior 1,2,3
- Allocation wounds has been slightly changed - you have to allocate wounds to a model based on it’s number of wounds before you move to a new group – ie. Nobz armed differently would have to stack two wounds on one nob before moving to the next
- They added back in multiple types of cover saves – no more universal 4+ – looks like a lot of 5+ now
- New type of save – Rigid – basically Feel no Pain. You may take it in addition to an armor save, but not against AP 1,2,3 or ID weapons
- Rules of Apocalypse units – Behemoth, Gargantuan Creature, Strength D
- Revamp of how units break in combat and what happens afterwards
- Complete revamp of movement. Some units have different movement values – Jump Packs have movement 9
- Fleet and Run changed – you now have different types of movement where you will move multiples of your move value
This doesn’t even scratch the surface. There are TONS of new rules. If this is legit it will be like learning a whole new game system. So far it looks good to me, nothing that will change the entire flavor of the game like the move from Warhammer Fantasy 7th to 8th.
I’m sure in the next few days there will be a flood of information on the net so hang to your butts cause I’m sure it’s gonna be a doozie.

some of these new rules remind me very much of old rogue trader rules!
I was just the other day looking through the rogue trader rulebook thinking the rules for modifying your BS based on how far a tank moved were cool and realistic, and should be brought back!
Indeed, there were many cool rules in rogue trader that would make todays game much better and in depth!
Of course, we don’t want to go right the way back to those days… I dont wanna spend a week playing a game!
Reading the write ups over on BOK and of course our blog, I am finding myself really hoping that these are real. Unfortunately, I have a feeling they aren’t. Sounds like a wish list “Rulebook” which is why it cant be real.
If it turns out that it is real, I can’t wait for it to come out as the official rules. Even if they are not, the person who wrote them needs to do a little rewrite (to remove anything GW might have issue with) and release it as a Generic SciFi Mini Wargame.
If these are not real, this is the most elaborate fandex ever, and it was apparently written very quickly. The Alpha Strike and Deep Strike rules alone explains why Flayed Ones appeared to be garbage. BUT ACTUALLY AREN’T.
I totally believe this to be legit. All of the rumors, including Eldar Str 7 AP 2 for the Starcannon have come fruition. Not only that, it ensures that the Black Templar is the next codex because there are NO updates for that codex (no updates for Necrons, either). There ARE updates for TAU, Chaos, Dark Angels, and others.
