The biggest reason that I am excited for the 6th edition of Warhammer 40k is that I am tired of fifth. The game has become stale to me. You pretty much know which army types are going to beat which other army types, and with the last few codexes there has been an ever increasing gap in power levels compared to some of the older codexes. It is time for a change.
Whether this change ends up being one that I enjoy more than 5th is still up in the air. To me it looks like they have changed the spirit of the game. Random charge lengths, hull points, completely reworked vehicle movement and shooting, flyers, the list goes on and on. Will these things make the game more fun? I think we will know in about two to three months.
The thing that I am most excited about is the allies. All you are seeing on the internet is doom and gloom about how powerful special character x from codex y is going to be when paired with army z. That is fine and all but I am just stoked about being able to mix Chaos Space Marines and Daemons. I’m also excited about Dark Eldar and Chaos Space Marines. And Guard and Chaos Space Marines. It is going to be a golden age of converting and modelling all these really neat options. I have already started to work converting up some kind of mutated Iron Warriors/Necron/Dark Eldar beast that I can’t wait to get on the table.

I’m probably not ever going to get much use out of the allies system with my own armies, but I’m very excited to see what other people come up with.
Most of the rest of the 6th Ed changes seem geared towards creating battles that are fun and interesting – i.e. are full of wacky, outlandish events and larger-than-life characters – rather than fair or predictable. I can see why a lot of tournament-oriented players are upset about this, but it doesn’t worry me in the slightest. If 6th can put some of the fun back into the game and discourage the “serious business” mentality, I’m all for it.
The word I heard to describe it was “Cinematic”. Seems to fit the bill with all changes. Zooming flyers; gun lines mowing down enemies starting with closest; more vehicles getting wrecked (niddy grin); character challenges; pyschic powers arcing back and forth. I would agree they are trying to increase the fun-factor. Fun is good for business.
