Jumping Ship- 40k Player goes to Fantasy

I got into Warhammer when I came up to Fayetteville, AR to go to college in the fall of 2007.  I went to the local shop and they sold me on starting a fantasy army.  That lasted all of a week before I completely quit the game.  To me, it was a boring game that held no appeal.  Fast forward to the Summer of 2009.  I studied abroad in Ireland, where they introduced me to 40k.  I fell in love and the rest is short history.  One of the things that made 40k stick for me was the fact that there was a strong local following- one that was adequate to keep my competitive spirit alive.

Now, 3 years later I find myself moving again.  This time to an area where fantasy reigns supreme.  The question was whether I should go back to fantasy, or remain solely a 40k player.  So, I went out and bought me a cheap dwarf army to learn the game.  Much to my surprise, 8th edition is a completely different game.  They took all the aspects that I hated about the game and got rid of them.  While it is still not a perfect game, and I still haven’t played enough to really get the full depth of the game, I am satisfied.

I think a lot of gamers find themselves in this situation at one point or another.  It almost feels like you are betraying the game that you have been semi-obsessed with for so many years.  For me, it comes down to when and where I can find fun, competitive games.

The edition change seems like the perfect time to take a break.  I’ll come back to 40k someday, but for now fantasy has taken my attention.

Bdix man I wouldn’t say that your jumping ship in this situation. If I was to move to an area where the local meta was warhammer fantasy heavy like you have done, I’d probably shift my focus to the local game of choice. That’s actually one reason I’ve been taking my time to learn other systems than 40k such as Warmachine/Hordes, Infinity, Fantasy, and even a bad attempt at Dark Age (which to me isn’t visually appealing nor was the rule set written very well.) This way if I happen to move out of town or state when I’m done with school, I might have some common ground with what ever group of gamers I move into.
