An Attempt at Sculpting Foam

An Attempt at Sculpting Foam

For the past two weeks I have been working on a giant Salamander head for my display board.  My goal was to make it look as though it were part of a mountain side.  Think Mount Rushmore with a dragon head. I started with a block of 8×8 inch foam.  It was intimidating, so I started the way any novice would:  I hacked into it violently.   I figured I would start by sculpting a mouth and nose, then work from there.  Whether it was pure luck, or divine intervention, somehow this worked out very well.  By working from the mouth up, I was able to control how far the dragon extended in any direction.  This allowed me to shape it any way I wanted.  The mouth gave me a guideline as to how large I wanted it to be, and which direction the rest of the head would...

He just wants to say, "Hi!" Now, shake hands…

Well, for several weeks I’ve been working on my Greater Daemon, an amalgamation of the Arachnarok Spider and a Daemon Prince. I still have a few touch-ups to do, but I’m pretty much finished. I thought I’d put up some pictures. I’m pretty proud of it. I think the modeling is relatively smooth, especially considering modeling is not my thing. I was actually pleasantly surprised with how well the Plague Engine from the Skaven worked as an almost preposterously large weapon.I had to put the model on a Valkyrie base due to its size, which will give me some issues from a Deep Striking standpoint, but sometimes you have to sacrifice playability for sheer awesomeness. I decided to use the tree base that came with the Arachnarok, and that fricking thing is almost the equivalent of two or three more models, painting-wise! The tree itself was pretty easy, but...

Keeper of Secrets WIP

Keeper of Secrets WIP

Howdy Folks:Well, this week I wanted to discuss the Keeper of Secrets I am making for my Daemons. I’ve never been much of a modeler, but I wanted a big centerpiece model for the army, and when the Arachnarok spider was announced, the wheels started turning. I came up with this idea, and it fits right in with the modeling I did for my Fiends. I put the spider together, leaving off the mandibles in front. I actually put the eye-plate on as I thought its rough nature would blend more fluidly with my green stuff. I then put together the upper torso of a Daemon Prince, filling the chaos symbol on the chest with green stuff to differentiate it from the Daemon Prince I’ve already built. I then set about working on my creation’s weapon. After convincing Big D to give me the plague furnace left over from...

Herald of Tzeentch Work in Progress

Herald of Tzeentch Work in Progress

So, this week I thought I’d post some pictures of the Herald of Tzeentch I’m currently painting. I built the Chariot out of the Vampire Counts Corpse Cart, so it looks like he’s springing off a pile of corpses, which I think is a pretty cool effect. I used the bier with flaming skulls behind him because I like the fact that the flames shooting from his hands match those behind him. I currently have him on a flying base, but I’m going to put him on a standard MC base with the pole from the flying base. I’ve drilled the hole slightly tilted because I feel that anything Tzeentch related would fly slightly askew. Most of the builds I’ve seen for Daemons run three or even four of these guys, but I’m too big of a fan of Greater Daemons (and I have what I consider a very nice...

Eldar Seer Council Conversion Idea

Eldar Seer Council Conversion Idea

I don’t play Eldar myself, but I always hear people complaining about the lack of model for a Warlock or Farsser on a Jet Bike. I was browsing around today and something jumped out at me that I thought would fill this need nicely - This is a picture of the best painted army at the Nova Open that Bald and Screaming posted. When I first saw it I couldn’t figure out what the Warlocks were riding on. After looking at it for a while I figured it out – it is the heavy weapon platform. This ends up being a bit expensive, the platforms are $25, which is $10 more than what a Jet Bike would cost but from what I have heard the cost is worth it. Filing down a metal mini in robes to fit on a pair of jetbike legs just doesn’t sound fun at...

Cyclops Mini from MaxMini

Cyclops Mini from MaxMini

MaxMini has a new Cyclops model up for sale that would work great for the Gorgon in a Beastmen army. This guy is 25 Euros, which is roughly $32 before shipping. It is 75mm to head and the total height is about 95mm. It comes with three different heads that would be great for some conversion work. I really dig this kit. If I were playing Beastmen I would definitely pick this up.

WIP – Ork Shadowskull

WIP – Ork Shadowskull

This weekend we are going to be playing a big Apocalypse game at War Pig Game and Hobby. Right now it is looking like 15,000 points per side not including super heavies. A while back I had gotten a really rough Bane Blade in part of a trade. I had originally planned on turning it into a piece of terrain – it was in REALLY rough shape – but Jester talked me into Orkifying it for the Apocalypse game. I started working on it trying to get it back in fighting condition one evening and I just had to give up – I didn’t have the tools on hand for it. I was trying to use the Citadel plastic glue on pieces that had paint on them, and brother that just doesn’t work. I was going to have to regroup and try again. That night I went to the...

Converted Primaris Psyker

Converted Primaris Psyker

Excommunicate Tratoris has a converted a really nice Primaris Psyker model. This looks like it was  a fairly involved conversion but at the same time, it looks like something that I *MIGHT* be able to do as well. The brown stuff work at the waist is really solid. Here is a shot of the Games Workshop Primaris Psyker - Seeing this I am even more impressed by the above conversion. They did a really good job of incorporating several elements from this model on their conversion.

New Ork Kommando Conversions Kits from Forge World

New Ork Kommando Conversions Kits from Forge World

Forge World has a new Ork conversion kit up – Kommandos. These models look pretty nice. I really like the Nob – the ‘Uge Choppa and boss pole are really sharp. This kit is 15 Pounds and works out to about $25 US including shipping. That is a bit high for six heads and backpacks, but not too bad since it is from Forge World and the quality you will get.
