A Completely Different Direction

A Completely Different Direction

After WarGamesCon, we decided that, as a gaming group, we needed to make sure that all of the new armies were represented, preferably well. Both Sweet E and I were caught out a bit by Dark Eldar in Austin. While we had read the codex, we hadn’t played them on a competitive level, and this proved a handicap. So, I decided to build a DE army for that as well as a few other reasons: they can be played competitively, and they play completely differently than my two other armies. I’ve traditionally played very assault-oriented armies that were remarkably in your face. I wanted to try something more subtle. I know there is going to be a significant learning curve, so I’m trying to get the army up and running as quickly as possible. Before anyone jumps all over me, I know that I haven’t suffered through the years...

Grey Knight – Henchmen & Display Board

The Henchmam Master!!

I’ve been playing Grey Knights for a couple months now and have defineately been making use of henchmen, but feel like I’ve stalled a little bit in coming up with new Inquisitorial Henchmen combo’s. Over on The Back 40k Spag wrote an article focusing on the best close combat henchmen setup. In response to his question, I’ve migrated towards all Death Cult Assassins. I have been running units of 10 of them which delivers 40 attacks on the charge. They don’t have grenades, but if your careful with your tactics they will still be devastating. I drop in independent characters like a Librarian or a Techmarine to buff them with Hammerhand, Might of Titan, and/or Rad Grenades making them simply murder. I’ve tried mixing in some crusaders here and there, but I just haven’t found anything that feels right for me. I like the high initiative and monster amount...

Eldar Snow and LED Lit Display Board Finished

Eldar Snow and LED Lit Display Board Finished

This will be the finale to my Warhammer 40k Eldar display board! You can read about the build in my last post here. After finishing building, wiring and taping over the LEDs, I then took a can of white spray primer and primed the board 2-3 times to give a purposefully uneven white undercoat.  I wanted some areas to have a better coverage, leave a few spots which should show through a little through the snow.  After the primer dried, I peeled off the tape in all the areas and again tested the lights to make sure they were working.  Then, again using gorilla glue, I attached all the  opaque crystals over the LEDS and glued down the trees into their places.  I used some white touch up paint to cover any places that had not been sprayed. The next step was to mix up a metric ton of...

Nurgle’s Sweet (if Slightly "Damp") Embrace

Nurgle’s Sweet (if Slightly "Damp") Embrace

One of my favorite units in my army is my Nurgle Daemon Prince. He’s actually the first unit I bought for the army, and I’ve been painting him off and on ever since. For some reason, I haven’t spent any concentrated amount of time working on him, but this week I finally got around to wrapping him up. I like his pose as it looks like he’s daring you to take a shot, and for some reason him straddling the swamp makes me happy. From a play standpoint, he’s one of my most useful units. He has a pretty hefty price tag with Mark of Nurgle, wings, cloud of flies, noxious touch, breath of chaos, and iron hide, but I find him almost as deadly in close combat as my Greater Daemon. If I drop him with my GD, he’s generally a secondary target for my opponent, which is...

Keeper of Secrets WIP

Keeper of Secrets WIP

Howdy Folks:Well, this week I wanted to discuss the Keeper of Secrets I am making for my Daemons. I’ve never been much of a modeler, but I wanted a big centerpiece model for the army, and when the Arachnarok spider was announced, the wheels started turning. I came up with this idea, and it fits right in with the modeling I did for my Fiends. I put the spider together, leaving off the mandibles in front. I actually put the eye-plate on as I thought its rough nature would blend more fluidly with my green stuff. I then put together the upper torso of a Daemon Prince, filling the chaos symbol on the chest with green stuff to differentiate it from the Daemon Prince I’ve already built. I then set about working on my creation’s weapon. After convincing Big D to give me the plague furnace left over from...

The Demons are coming and Just in time to get Grey Knighted

The Demons are coming and Just in time to get Grey Knighted

So, after the 3-day marathon that was Bolscon last year, I was, simply put, burned out. I didn’t want to play. I didn’t want to paint. I didn’t want to look at a codex. It had nothing to do with the tournament, which was quite enjoyable if a bit grueling. Rather, I had been playing so regularly and working so much to finish painting my army that the fallout following the tournament lasted several months. I tried fantasy for a while and painted up some Ogres, which I quite like, but fantasy did not really catch on with the guys with whom I usually play. Therefore, I turned my eyes and my hobby time back toward 40k. I picked up a couple of different models to see what struck my fancy. The one I most enjoyed painting was the new plastic Demon prince, so I set about starting a...

Ork Looted Wagon Conversion – Heavy Weathering – pt. 2

Ork Looted Wagon Conversion – Heavy Weathering – pt. 2

In my last post on this model I showed you how I physically weathered the model before painting it. In this post I will go over how I weathered it with paints and pigments. The first step was to paint the model Blue. I wanted this vehicle to have previously belonged to the Ultramarines Space Marine chapter. I figured the blue would be very recognizable since Ultramarines are pretty much the iconic Warhammer 40k faction and it would also contrast nicely with the orange and red rust colors. To paint this guy blue I broke out the airbrush and mixed up a 60:40 ratio of Alcohol to Ultramarine Blue and went to town on it. I gave the model a good coat but didn’t worry too much about getting a perfectly uniform coat, I also didn’t worry about hitting all the cracks and crevices as you can see in...

The Blood Drive part 4

The Blood Drive part 4

The Fresh Prince of Be lakor air I love the Be lakor model from the fantasy range. I believe he is now discontinued and only available on GW direct order. In my Khorne list the only anti tank I have is 1 thirster and 3 bare bone princes. I bought 3 Be lakor which is a great model and a great pose. I’m trying to make them all a little different as 3 of the same pose and paint job would make them rather bland all on the table at once. The Little story I made up for my princes is they’re all brothers and they’ve all been rallied to the cause of the blood thirster. (all of which have yet to be named) The cause being most likely war or guaranteed bloodshed. I obviously need to get my thoughts more together on the fluff for this army. That’s...

Death Korps of Krieg part 5

Death Korps of Krieg part 5

Excitement Ensues! I made a lot of progress over the past week. I had my DKOK’s assembled and they are ready to go minus 3 flamers I was short that I’ll have to order soon. I finished assembling my 4 Hydra flak tanks. I got one more Valkyrie assembled as well. I’m excited I’ve ordered the Forgeworld Model Masterclass book and eagerly await it in the mail. I’m more than on schedule for my June deadline. My goal was to get everything assembled by March. I’m well on my way and I look forward to getting my brush wet! My favorite guy is this one. To me it screams cool. A DKoK veteran jumping out of a trench blasting is melta gun to undoubtedly take out enemy armor.

Death Korps of Krieg part 4

Death Korps of Krieg part 4

It’s in the detail. Going with the sky is the limit with my DKoK army I decided to make it as real as my current modeling/painting skill level would allow. I’ve done a metric ton of internet research on everything from the DKoK’s themselves to WW2 to current tanks and soldiers uniforms. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t completely stoked about this army. What really has gotten me all worked up is the vehicles. Since my last army (Renaissance marines) I’ve learned a lot about vehicles and painting. I’m ready to put all this theory into practice. I’ve constructed up 5 tanks now and I would like to think that each one tells a story. The 4 below will all eventually be hydra flak tanks. They first hydra is one of my favorites. I put little indention all over the front of the vehicle centering most...
