Easy chaos heads

Easy chaos heads

Here is how I have made most of the heads for my Chaos Space Marines. I decided I wanted a really warped army so I started digging through the bits box for something suitable for a head. When I stumbled across a few spore mines I knew I had hit pay dirt. They were perfect. To head-ify the spore mines is easy. Just take a jewelers saw and cut right beneath the ‘head’ where the tentacles start. Then gently round up the ends with a Dremel tool and they will fit right in place. The best part is that you get two usable pieces out of each mine. You get the head and a mass of tentacles to use however you want. I have used the tentacles for heads, arms, and legs. I am still toying around with having a mass of them bursting out of a chest but haven’t…

Conversion – Chest bursting with tentacles – part 1

Conversion – Chest bursting with tentacles – part 1

This conversion was quite easy and turned out well. I had a regular Space Marine chest piece and wanted to chaos it up. It had the big imperial eagle on the chest so I had to do something with that. I thought about scratching it out or defacing it in some way but that just didn’t float my boat. After a bit of though I figured out what it needed – tentacles. I took my Dremel tool and cut a rough gash all the way through to inside the chest cavity. I trimmed it up a bit but left it a bit rough around the edges. I then took a ball of green stuff and rolled out some tubes and smoothed them up. I stuck them in the gaping chest wound and pushed them around a bit with a modeling tool. This took about half an hour to do from…

GW Primer Replacement

I love Games Workshop’s products as much as the next guy but the prices on a few of their items are a bit high. Case in point – primer. At $10 a can I think we can do better. I have read tons of people saying the have had luck using auto primer, Krylon from Wal-Mart, and a host of others. I decided to try out one of these alternatives. The one I chose to test was QUICK COLOR from Home Depot. At $1 a can I figured I didn’t have much to lose. So far I have had very good luck with the black QUICK COLOR paint. I have used it on Chaos Space Marine guns and backpacks as well as all of my scenery. It has a nice matte finish and paint takes to it very nicely. The white is another story. I primed a fantasy Orc for…

Terrain – A Section of Pipeline

Terrain – A Section of Pipeline

If you are painting up an army you are going to eventually want to play a few games with it. In order to do that you need a few things in addition to your army – a table, an opponent, dice, and terrain. I have been working on a few pieces of terrain in between troops to keep everything fresh. Today I will show you how to make a very simple and cheap piece of terrain for your table. For this piece of terrain you will need the following - 2x 90 degree 1/2″ pvc connectors 4″ of 1/2″ pvc pipe PVA glue Superglue a 6″x 3″ piece of hard board (the exact dimensions aren’t important. Just eyeball something that looks right) Stuff to base your scenery – ballast, rocks, sand – whatever you use for your models Black spray paint (or GW Black Primer if you are rich) A…

Sculpting – Head Foundation

Sculpting – Head Foundation

In my pursuit to become a better sculptor I have decided to tackle sculpting a head. The first thing I needed was a base to work off of. I found a 4 pack of corks at Hobby-Lobby that have been working great as a base. I then stuck a toothpick in the cork and rounded up a ball of green stuff and put it on top of the toothpick. After letting it dry overnight it made a great starting point to work on the head. I tried before without letting it dry and I had tons of trouble with the green stuff pulling away from the toothpick.

Squad Pusto – 002

Squad Pusto – 002

Here is a pic of another member of Squad Pusto. I have him up over at coolminiornot.com so you can go vote on him if you want – link - coolminiornot.com score – I painted the armor and weapon the same as my previous Death Guard model – Catachan Green, dark wash, Catachan Green, Catachan Green/Bleached bone on the armor and Black, Tin Bitz, Boltgun, Black Wash on the gun. For the fleshy arm I did things a bit different. I started off with a base coat of Snot Green and then washed that with a mix of Snot Green and Chaos Black. I then highlighted the raised areas with Snot Green and then a mix of Snot Green and Skull White. For the bone protrusions I used Bleached Bone washed with Chestnut Ink and then highlighted with Bleached Bone. I really liked how the arm turned out. I used…

Work in progress – Squad Caro Beta – 001 – part 1

Work in progress – Squad Caro Beta – 001 – part 1

Here are some WIP shots of the first model in my second squad – Caro Beta. His torso is a standard Chaos Space Marine torso and the head is off of the old Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Spawn. To get the head on I bored out a hole with an Exacto knife in the torso and then stuck it in there and glued it in place. It is a simple head swap but I though it looked pretty neat. I will post some more pictures when I get the arms and legs on. Not sure what I’m going to do with them just yet.

Terminator Conversion – Wormy Librarian – part 1

Terminator Conversion – Wormy Librarian – part 1

I have started working on my Terminator Squad. I haven’t come up with a name for the squad yet so this guy is going to go by wormy librarian until then. My general plan is to take an old Space Marine pewter Librarian and turn him into a Chaos Terminator. First I am going to do a head swap but this is not just any old head swap. The model is pewter and the head is made down into the chest of the model. I tried filing the head off with a Dremel tool but I just couldn’t get the angles right. I thought about trying a saber saw but figured I would run into the same problems there. I found my solution in a jewelers saw. Since a jewelers saw has a real thin blade I was able to work it along the curvature of the armor behind the…

Death Guard – Squad Pusto – 001

Death Guard – Squad Pusto – 001

Here is a picture of one of my rank-and-file Death Guard. I painted his Shoulder Pad purple to match the rest of my army. I started out by priming him White and then did a base coat of Catachan Green. I then painted the trim with Chaos Black and went over that with Tin Bitz. Next I washed over the green with a mix of wash of Catachan Green and Chaos Black. I then highlighted the raised areas with an increasing mix of Catachan Green and Bleached Bone. For the weapons and backpacks I started with black, drybrushed them with Tin Bitz, then Boltgun Metal, and then washed them with a Catachan Green. For the base I put down a muddy mix of Catachan Green and Bestial Brown and after sealing I went over it with some Varnish to make it shiny. I put this guy up over at coolminiornot.com…

Cool Mini or Not – Squad Caro – 001

Cool Mini or Not – Squad Caro – 001

I put a few pics of a rank-and-file Chaos Space Marine from Squad Caro up on coolminiornot.com to see what people think about it. Here is a link – Squad Caro – 001. Coolminiornot.com is basically hotornot.com for miniatures. Users look at the pictures of the miniatures you upload and judge them on a scale of 1 – 10. The scale goes from 10 being amazing Golden Demon style work, 8 for a great job, and 5 being tabletop quality. So far my miniature is sitting at about a 4. I was expecting something a bit higher but then I go and look at other models that are getting a 6 or so and I am blown away. It has been about five years since I painted anything after all. *Updated* I found a way to dynamically link the models current score to here on the page – Current Score…
